day.4: Joure - Lemmer - Kuinder, 54 km

We mostly spend the night at private homes (organisation "vrienden van de fiets" /friends of bikers). Ideal if you want to travel low budget. You stay with people who offer a bedroom and a delicious breakfast. Last night in Joure we stayed with a lovely lady in a big house, our bedroom was about 18 m2. She had to go to work at 8.30, so she gave us the key of the house and the key for the alarm installation. " Just put them in the letter box when you leave!" We were speechless.
Tonight we are staying in a private home south of Lemmer. The landlady noticed  that we were quite tired after a long day of cycling with low temperatures ( 12 degrees). She offered to drive us to the next village where there was a nice small restaurant with delicious food, and of course she came back again some tome later to take us home again.
Incredible! The people in Friesland are so special, warm.
Anyway, today is was really cold, about 12 degrees. Terrible! No chance to sit on a bank and watch birds, sheep and boats.
On the way to Lemmer we passed lots of lakes
this is how we find our way in this beautiful country
Time for a koffie break: SLOTEN. What a beautiful village !!

In Joure we passed Wouda pumping-station. Nearly 100 years ago an engineer called Wouda constructed the biggest pumping-station (gemaal) in the world to prevent the flooding of Friesland.

With this installation, world heritage of the UNESCO, millions of m3 of water from the lakes and canals in Friesland  can be pumped into the IJsselmeer to prevent flooding.
Why do the Netherlands need pumping-stations? Just look at an example of the water levels in the country

Once again water to be crossed over by boat. this time a very special boat with palm trees.
Marie Louise is cycling like a champion. Thanks to a bike shop in Lemmer I can keep up with her now. (My tyres urgently needed air).

There are more heroes in the world: the volunteers in our homes who give one year of their life to work with our children.
