In 2019 I went on a field trip to Haïti to visit all
the projects of WereldOuders/NPH.
I was enormously touched by the visit of St. Damien’s Children’s
Hospital. Every year about 90.000
children get the medical treatment they need, most of them for free because
they are so poor. Some 3.000 women come to the hospital to give birth to
their child, most of them in high risk conditions. So far it was not possible
to make a good diagnosis because the hospital had no ultrasound machine. As a
consequence a Caesarian section was the only option to try to save the life of
mother and child.
Together with Hester Dollemann, medical advisor of
WereldOuders, we raised funds for an ultrasound machine for St. Damien’s Children’s
Hospital. In November 2019 Hester went back to Haiti with a brand new
ultrasound machine. She gave training to the staff in Haiti to learn how to use the new medical equipment.
There is direct contact with medical specialists of AMC hospital in Amsterdam to discuss cases. What a milestone to save lives in Haiti.
Thanks a lot to all sponsors who helped to make this possible.
